Measure Your Area
Grab a tape measure and get the length and width of the area you want to cover. For irregular shapes, break it into rectangles and calculate each section.
Choose Your Depth
Enter the depth in inches. Topping off an existing driveway? 1-2 inches is plenty. Building from bare ground? Go 4-6 inches. See our depth guide below for help.
Get Your Price
We calculate your cubic yards, convert to tons based on material density, and show your delivered price โ including spreading and light raking.
Recommended Depth by Project
Not sure how deep to go? Here's a quick reference guide.
| Project Type | Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New driveway (bare ground) | 4-6" | Start with 3-4" of base gravel, then 2" of finish gravel on top |
| Driveway refresh / top-off | 1-2" | Already have a gravel base? A thin top layer is all you need |
| Walkway / Path (gravel) | 2-3" | Use a compactable gravel for a firm surface; decorative rock needs 2" min |
| Landscape bed (decorative rock) | 2-3" | Covers weed fabric well at 2"; go to 3" for larger river rock |
| Garden / lawn prep (topsoil) | 3-4" | Enough for grass seed or sod to root; 6"+ for raised garden beds |
| Patio / paver base | 4" | Level and compact thoroughly before laying pavers or flagstone |
| French drain / drainage | 6-8" | Surround perforated pipe with drainage rock on all sides |
| Fill / leveling | Varies | Measure the low spots โ depth depends entirely on your grade |
The Math Behind the Calculator
Step 1 โ Square footage: Length (ft) ร Width (ft) = Area in square feet
Step 2 โ Volume: Area (sq ft) ร Depth (ft) รท 27 = Cubic yards
Step 3 โ Weight: Cubic yards ร material density (typically 1.28 โ 1.5 tons/ydยณ depending on material) = Tons needed
Tip: For new driveways and base layers, consider ordering 10โ15% extra โ crushed gravel compacts significantly under traffic. For decorative rock in landscape beds, what you order is usually what you get since it doesn't compact much.
