The Math Behind the Calculator
Step 1 — Square footage: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Area in square feet
Step 2 — Volume: Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27 = Cubic yards
Step 3 — Weight: Cubic yards × material density (typically 1.28 – 1.5 tons/yd³ depending on material) = Tons needed
Tip: For new driveways and base layers, consider ordering 10–15% extra — crushed gravel compacts significantly under traffic. For decorative rock in landscape beds, what you order is usually what you get since it doesn't compact much.
